Diagrammatic Reasoning by Propagating Constraints Through Geometric Objects: An Application to Truss Analysis
نویسنده
چکیده
A diagrammatic reasoning for structural analysis on trusses is proposed and demonstrated on many examples . In the reasoning, deflected shape of a substructure is drawn at first then it is reasoned how the remaining substructure is affected by the deflection . By identifying the elongated parts are in tension and shortened parts are in compression, a qualitative stress analysis can be done diagrammatically . The method is implemented on a graphical tool that allows direct operation on geometrical objects constraining with each other by geometric constraints. Some theoretical correspondence between drawing diagram and qualitative determinacy of a stress is also addressed.

ion, that produce composite abstractions, and reduction, that decompose abstractions into their constituent parts. The degree of structure of an abstraction or its informative content is captured with a definition of abstraction’s entropy, which is also given. The representational format permits to express incomplete information and constraints, and the definitions of the abstraction and reduct...
متن کاملApplication of Network RTK Positions and Geometric Constraints to the Problem of Attitude Determination Using the GPS Carrier Phase Measurements
Nowadays, navigation is an unavoidable fact in military and civil aerial transportations. The Global Positioning System (GPS) is commonly used for computing the orientation or attitude of a moving platform. The relative positions of the GPS antennas are computed using the GPS code and/or phase measurements. To achieve a precise attitude determination, Carrier phase observations of GPS requiring...
متن کاملDamage Assessment using an Inverse Fracture Mechanics approach
This paper studies the application of an inverse methodology for problem solving in fracture mechanics using the finite element analysis. The method was applied to both detection of subsurface cracks and the study of propagating cracks. The procedure for detection of subsurface cracks uses a first order optimization analysis coupled with a penalty function to solve for the unknown geometric par...
متن کاملDiagrammatic Reasoning by Simulation
Humans employ diagrams and other pictures, both real and imagined, as aids to reasoning, and many kinds of problems are solved by an interaction between perception-like processing and verbal reasoning. My research is exploring computational explanations of this interaction. The use of diagrams is in part a form of spatial reasoning, which is the use of representations of objects in space for pr...
متن کاملSpatial Logic and the Complexity of Diagrammatic Reasoning
Researchers have sought to explain the observed \eecacy" of diagrammatic reasoning (DR) via the notions of \limited abstraction" and inexpressivity 17, 20]. We argue that application of the concepts of computational complexity to systems of dia-grammatic representation is necessary for the evaluation of precise claims about their eecacy. We show here how to give such an analysis. Centrally, we ...
